There is no single physical size that works for every QR code and every poster. A short URL on a business card, a complex contact card on a label, and a code viewed from across a room all need different treatment. Print size depends on data density, intended viewing distance, camera quality and printing conditions.
Start with viewing distance
For close-range handouts, a code around 2–3 cm wide can be a practical starting point if it contains a short URL and has crisp edges. Larger codes are generally preferable for signage viewed at arm's length or farther away. These are design starting points, not universal guarantees.
Keep the quiet zone
The blank border is part of the functional image. A standard QR code uses a four-module quiet zone. Don't crop it away, even if it appears to be wasted space. Avoid placing other text or artwork against the outer modules.
Understand data density
The number of modules grows as the encoded information becomes longer or error correction increases. A small QR code with thousands of characters can have much smaller printed squares than a code linking to a short URL. When printed dimensions are constrained, link to a webpage instead of encoding a long paragraph directly.
Why SVG is useful
Vector files can be scaled without blurring the module edges, making SVG a good choice for professional print layouts. PNG also works when exported at a sufficiently high resolution and not enlarged dramatically later. QRBento offers both formats.
Watch out for print materials
Glossy signs can cause glare. Curved bottles bend the pattern. Ink bleed can close small white gaps. If possible, make a sample using the same material and final print process before committing to quantity.
Checklist before ordering prints
- Check the destination or encoded content.
- Keep clear space on all four sides.
- Export at appropriate quality.
- Print a sample at final physical size.
- Scan with different phones in realistic light.
- Check the code again after mounting it.
